If you are curious about acupuncture but uncertain what to expect, here are some of the most common questions:
Does it hurt?
The sensation of acupuncture is more like moderate pressure than pain. Acupuncture needles are extremely thin and flexible. Approximately 30 could fit inside a typical hypodermic needle. Acupuncture needles are not hollow, nor are they used for injecting medicine of any kind. A typical treatment at ZüpMed would use 5-20 needles, depending on the type of session and the condition(s) being addressed.
Does it work?
Acupuncture needles are inserted at very precise locations on the body to cause specific actions. Activating these points regulates blood flow, alters sensitivity to pain and impacts the nervous system to effect change. Working closely with the medical team, your practitioner uses acupuncture to treat:
- Stress & anxiety
- Emotional well-being
- Insomnia
- Low energy
- Seasonal allergies
- Hypertension
- Poor digestion
- Headache, including migraine
- TMJ and dental pain
- PMS and menstrual irregularity
- Smoking cessation
- Musculoskeletal pain and injury, including sports injuries & overuse injuries such as:
- Tennis elbow
- Back & neck pain
- Sprains & strains
- Shoulder injury
- Knee pain
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Restless legs syndrome
- Tight hamstrings & calves
Is it safe?
The needles used at ZüpMed are sterile, single-use and disposable; they are never reused. Licensed acupuncturists are trained to identify contraindications and minimize risk. Our practitioners take precautions to stop the spread of coronavirus, as recommended by state and federal health entities.
Who is Allison Musick?
Of the roughly 37,000 practitioners of Chinese Medicine in the United States, we think ZüpMed has one of the best! Allison works to improve the overall well-being of all patients in the areas of sleep, mood, digestion and energy. She has experience treating musculoskeletal conditions and pain, including sports-related injury, to reduce inflammation and speed healing as a complement to physical therapy, pharmaceuticals or even surgery. She especially enjoys introducing to acupuncture those patients who are looking for care alternatives but may be skeptical about complementary methods. Her gentle approach is calming and effective, providing low-risk, time-tested protocols to improve health. Allison has completed over 3,000 hours of training, passed extensive written and clinical Board exams, and then practiced in recognized centers of complementary and alternative medicine like Atlanta and New York City. She’s fully accredited by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and maintains her license through rigorous continuing education requirements.
