Botox injections have a myriad of uses. From reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face to treating conditions such as muscle spasms, excessive sweating, and migraines, this procedure provides beneficial results. Botox uses a toxin called onobotulinumtoxin A derived from the microorganism that temporarily prevents a muscle from moving by blocking chemical signals in your body that cause the muscle to contract.
How is Botox Done?
BOTOX® injections are performed at a clinic by a licensed health professional, usually a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or registered nurse. The health professional injects small amounts of the botulinum toxin into skin or muscles, and the number of injections needed varies based on what area is being treated and how extensive the treatment area is.
Prior to the procedure, the health care professional may use a method of numbing, such as a topical anesthetic, ice, or vibration anesthesia (a method which uses massage to reduce discomfort). It is important to tell the healthcare team at your clinic of any medications you are on particularly muscle relaxants, sleeping aids, allergy medications, and blood thinners. If you do take blood thinners, your provider may ask you to stop taking this medication several days before your injections to decrease the chances of bleeding or bruising.
Following the procedure, it is important not to massage or rub the treated area for 24 hours to ensure that the toxin stays in the treatment area and does not spread to another area of the skin or muscle.
When Do Results of Botox Show Up?
Typically, results from a BOTOX® treatment show up one to three days following the injections. Depending on what the BOTOX® is being used for, results can last up to three months or potentially longer. In order to sustain the effect of the treatment, regular follow-up injections are needed.
What Are the Side Effects of Botox?
While BOTOX® injections are relatively safe when performed by an experienced provider, there are some key side effects to be aware of when receiving this treatment. These include:
- Pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection site
- Headache
- Flu-like symptoms
- Droopy or cockeyed eyebrows
- Crooked smile
- Drooling
- Eye dryness or excessive tearing
While it rarely occurs, botulinum toxin can spread to other parts of your body and cause more severe side effects. If you experience any of the following after a BOTOX® treatment, call your doctor immediately:
- Muscle weakness
- Vision problems
- Trouble speaking or swallowing
- Breathing problems
- Loss of bladder control
In addition to these side effects, Botox is generally not recommended in patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Patients who are allergic to cow’s milk protein (also called casein) should not undergo Botox procedures.
